The
population of southern Illinois is largely rural, under the national poverty level,
medically underserved and consists of a proportion of elderly above the national
norms. In addition, the local hospital, and only hospital in White County, abruptly
and improperly closed placing the community and surrounding areas in extraordinary
medical crisis with a heightened risk of life and limb. These factors motivated
members of the community of Carmi, Illinois to formally organize as Phoenix Foundation
of Southern Illinois, Inc. NFP for the purpose of facilitating and restoring health
care services and all allied uses and purposes thereto.
Due to the crisis
and imminent danger to the population of Carmi, IL and the surrounding area, the
restoration of hospital, emergency, and needed long term care services to White
County is the current Board ratified project. Our efforts will continue to focus
on health care needs in the southern Illinois area in the coming years
